26.05.22 - Bergen

It's an overcast day in Bergen, but still nice to be out and about. We passed the funicular yesterday and decided to take a ride up the hillside today. This is another popular thing to do so be prepared to get in line and wait your turn. There are two funicular that basically run back-to-back, so you won't wait very long for the next ride. Tickets in hand, we hop on board and watch as we climb what seems like a very steep hillside (moreso than I would have thought).

Once you get to the top, it's a pretty cool view of Bergen down below. Not a 360-view since there are trees behind you, but a cool view nonetheless.

Now to get some steps in and get away from the crowd. There's many pathways and trails up on this hill, and it's about a three kilometer walk back down to the city center if you didn't want to ride the funicular back down (or ride up).

The trails are well-maintained and easy to follow, with signs marking the different paths you can take. The path we followed leg to a sizeable lake in what seemed like the middle of nowhere. Following the lake along the trail took us right back towards the center area with the funicular. It's a very nice walk with a little bit of exertion and actually very quiet! We only passed a handful of people along the way.

Breakfast

~ Opus XVI

Vågsallmenningen 16, 5014 Bergen, Norway

  • Buffet

Lunch

~ Café Opera

Engen 18, 5011 Bergen, Norway

  • Chevre Salad

  • Tomato soup (soup of the day)

  • Sweet potato salad

This place is so cute and the food is so tasty! It's a quintessential European bistro with relaxed atmosphere and good food. If we had more time in Bergen I'd definitely come back here!

Dinner

~ Frescohallen

Vågsallmenningen 1, 5014 Bergen, Norway

  • Turbot

  • Fish and chips

  • Avocado salad

We thought we'd try the restaurant in the cool fresco dining room of the Hotel Bergen Børs, but in the end we found it was not worth the price. The food tasted good, but what you got for the price was not worth it and we found the service a little lacking for a higher-end restaurant.
