26.05.20 - Flåm

Today's big event is a fjord ferry, the highlight of the trip and the reason we're in Flåm. This is also the reason most, if not all, people come to Flåm. Part of me is a little worried that it'll be crazy busy, and the line waiting to board does make it seem like it might be. But as we board and find standing room, with be moving to the bottom deck instead of standing with everyone else at the top deck, we got a pretty good spot.

Suffice to say, the ferry is totally worth it! Cruising through the fjord on what's basically glassy water is an awesome experience. I don't think I'll ever do anything like this again so trying to soak in as much as I can.

The key to fully enjoying the experience is to dress warm, probably more warm than you would think. Towards the latter half of the ride, the wind picked up and we started to freeze a bit and I definitely should've brought gloves and my puffer jacket (or a better windbreaker).

But nevertheless, 10/10 recommend the experience to anyone and everyone!

Specific details:

We booked the ferry through Norway's Best. Our route is Flåm to Gudvangen, but you can do the reverse and start in Gudvangen. With the round-trip ticket, we chose to take a shuttle bus back to Flåm which cuts through the mountain via tunnels and takes about 20 minutes versus the 2-hour ferry ride. You can choose to return on the ferry, but that seemed a bit long to be on a boat for us.

After returning from the ferry, we follow walking paths on the hillside for a nice high view of the harbor. There are some slightly steep sections, but totally accessible for adults and kids.

Post-hike leads us to Flåm Farm which serves beer and wine, plus a few non-alcoholic juices. The best part - they have adorable animals! It sounded like they were just getting started as a farm, so they had some baby lambs, mini pigs and chickens. Plus a beautiful setting. Hard to beat this!

Breakfast

~ Flåmsbrygga Hotel

A-Feltvegen 25, 5743 Flåm, Norway

  • Buffet

Not the best buffet, but it's included in our room rate. Certainly suffices!

Lunch

~ Bufet Restaurant & Cafeteria

Fetagata 47, Building 2, 5747 Gudvangen, Norway

  • Fish and chips

  • Veggie burger

I would not recommend this restaurant, but I would recommend the place nextdoor - Gudvangen Kafe & Bakeri. Their pizzas looked and smelled amazing!

Dinner

~ Flåm Bakeri

A-Feltvegen 11, 5743 Flåm, Norway

  • Voss Pizza

Very good pizza! Altho the employees weren't very aware of us waiting for our order. Nevertheless, we ate the pizza (plus a stuffed baked potato) on the balcony watching everything happening below. Pretty nice.

~ Stuffed Baked Potato

  • The Green

This is what happens when I don't photograph or write down the name of the food place...but there's a food stall selling stuffed baked potatoes. Very tasty!
